Interactive Ontario


Ian is an interactive producer and strategist and is the principal at Modern World Communications, a Toronto-based interactive production and development firm. He is also President of the Interactive Ontario (IO), a member-based not-for-profit industry association representing interactive digital media content production companies in Ontario.

Since 2003 Ian has helped develop the Interactive Ontario into a vital voice for interactive production in Ontario. During this time he has produced a number of programmes including iSummit 2006, ICE 2007, multiple seasons of iLunch, a case-study business development luncheon series. He also developed and acted as Administrator for pl@tform, a calling card programme to help emerging New Media companies showcase their abilities. Currently Ian is project leader for the Canadian Interactive Industry Profile (CIIP), a new national economic survey of the New Media industry in Canada.

From 1999 to 2002, Ian was a partner, VP and Executive Producer at Primitive Entertainment, a television and new media production company where he was in charge of convergence strategy and marketing. Ian won the CyberPitch competition at the 2001 Banff Television Festival and took 2nd Prize at the Wanadoo Talent Show at MIPCOM 2000 in France.

Previous to that, Ian was Executive Producer, Special Projects with MediaLinx Interactive, publisher of the Sympatico.ca website. At MediaLinx, Ian developed and co-produced the 1998 Nagano Olympic Winter Games site in association with the CBC.

Ian began his interactive career in 1994 at Magic Online, one of Canada's first commercial online services. As Director of Media Services Ian oversaw Magic’s digital content and community operations as well as the launch of its web division and dial-up Internet services.

Ian is a co-founder of the Canadian Interactive Alliance / Alliance interactive canadienne (CI@IC), the national voice for interactive media in Canada. He is also a member of Trade Team Canada - Cultural Goods & Services, the Cultural Human Resources Council New Media Steering Committee and the Ontario Media Development Corporation’s Digital Media Advisory Committee and Industry Organization Advisory Committee. In 2005 he was Chair of the Advisory Board for the Canadian New Media Awards.

Ian has a B.F.A (Honours) from York University where he completed an individualized study programme concentrating in film, screenwriting, photography and creative writing. He is the Founding President of the Creative Arts Students’ Association, the official student government for the Faculty of Fine Arts at York.
